8 Ways to Make Downsizing Manageable

It can be overwhelming to even think about downsizing a lifetime of possessions, let alone doing it. Add sentimental objects to the mix and it can leave you in decision paralysis. Consider the following tips when you’re considering downsizing your home.

Just get started. The best time to start is now. It’s best to start early and take your time to avoid feeling overwhelmed or anxious. When you give yourself plenty of time to sort through your belongings, you can feel more in control and do it at your pace.

Be Practical. You have to set realistic goals. Break it down into smaller tasks for each session. It might be a drawer, a shelf, a room or a category of items. Start small and build your decluttering muscles.

Don’t start with sentimental items. Save anything emotionally charged for later, once those decluttering muscles are stronger and better able to deal with more challenging pieces. Photos and sentimental items should be organized last.

Take advantage of technology. Once you do get to sorting photos, scan them. With a digital frame, you’re more likely to see them more frequently, which is another bonus. Digital storage takes up a lot less space.

Make it into a party. Ask family and friends to help out. Not only can they provide support, they can also give another perspective, which is always beneficial. It can made decisions easier, when you get another opinion.

Sell or donate. It can make it easier to declutter if you know that your items are going to a charity. If that’s just too hard to do or if you need the cash, consider selling your items. See our resource page for some ideas.

Stay focused. Keep you goals in mind. Make sure to take breaks, stay hydrated and properly fueled. It’s hard to focus on de-cluttering if you’re tired, hungry or dehydrated. Prevent burnout and help stay focused by making sure you pace yourself and properly prepare for the session.

Stay positive and celebrate small victories along the way. De-cluttering and organizing can be a lot of work, physically and emotionally.  Help yourself stay motivated with little rewards and reminders of how good it will feel.
